Club nights: 8.15 Monday evenings at the Union Reform Church hall, Market Hill Maldon. These are generally social gatherings with planned activities from time to time.
Club runs: Meeting at All Saints Church, Maldon Sunday mornings. Phone the clubrun secretary for details of specific dates as some runs are “drive and ride”
Time trials: Tuesday evenings April – August and Saturday mornings September – October, based at the Star pub, Steeple. See calendar of events for times. Try to arrive 30 minutes before the start to sign on and get a number. ALL abilities and types of bike are welcomed, but road style bikes are the most suitable. These events are an ideal introduction to a much wider world of competitive cycling. The minimum age for road time trials is 12 and a parental consent form is required.
Cyclo-crosses: These run at Bungalow Nurseries, Rectory Lane, off the old road between South Woodham Ferrers and Rettendon Turnpike. See the calendar of events for dates and times. Try to arrive 30 minutes early to sign on and get a number. ALL abilities are welcomed. Mountain bikes or cyclo-cross bikes are recommended..
Reliability trials: These are non-competitive challenges similar to sportives where riders elect to try and get around designated routes within time limits of their choice. Unlike sportives, break periods are expected. See event calendar for dates. The specific details of forthcoming promotions will be posted on the website shortly before the event.
Just riding: Many people who discover cycling tend to ride on the only roads they know – the ones they drive their cars along. Essex, especially to the north, has a wealth of quiet rural lanes where it is possible to ride for several miles without seeing a car. One of the most interesting ways of discovering these is to buy a good map and go investigating. The Ordnance Survey “Landranger” maps give excellent coverage and detail at modest cost. Maps 167 (Chelmsford) & 168 (Colchester) cost around £7 each and give excellent coverage of most areas within a days ride of the Maldon region
Refreshment Whether you are going on a club run, or just want to go out on your own you might be looking for somewhere to stop for a break. There are several websites that list welcoming cafes & tea rooms, but some give sparse or out of date detail. One of the best sources is on the Easterley Cycling Club website: http://www.easterleycycling.org.uk/cafes.html Please realise that this information is for guidance only and that establishments such as these appear and disappear fairly regularly.
